About Mill Festival Varel
Mill Festival Varel — edition 2026
The 2026 edition continues the long-standing tradition and offers a varied program for all generations around the Varel Windmill. The event is organized by Stadtmarketing Varel GmbH in collaboration with the local Mill Association, which ensures the maintenance and preservation of the historic mill.
The Whitsun weekend has been dedicated to the Mill Festival in Varel for decades: those who have attended once gladly return, because the mix of customs, maritime music, and relaxed atmosphere by the mill pond creates its special charm. In 2026, a large turnout from the entire Friesland district is expected again.

Whitsun at the Mill
When the sails of the historic Varel Windmill reach invitingly into the May sky at Whitsun, one of the most beautiful folk festivals in Friesland begins. The Mill Festival has been an integral part of the Varel festival calendar for decades and stands for lived tradition, voluntary commitment, and warm hospitality.
Opening with a Birch Branch
The opening ceremony is a cherished custom: the current mayor appears with a fresh birch branch, an old North German symbol of luck, and officially kicks off the event. Afterwards, the organizers invite guests to the free beer tapping and to chat under the birch trees by the mill pond.
Shanty Choir and Maritime Sounds
Musically, the Shanty Choir from Nordenham shapes the atmosphere with sea shanties and Low German tunes. The songs about home, harbor, and seafaring perfectly match the maritime character of the town of Varel on the Jade Bay.
Vintage Car Show and Bike Tour
A real eye-catcher is the vintage car show, where historic vehicles with gleaming paintwork are presented on the festival grounds. For those who prefer something more active, there's a guided bike tour through the landscape around Varel, offering insights into nature reserves and the region's history.
Ecumenical Church Service
On Whit Sunday, an ecumenical open-air church service is held at the mill – a contemplative moment that combines the spiritual dimension of the Whitsun festival with the convivial character of the Mill Festival.
Coffee, Cake, and Mill Tours
Coffee and homemade cake are served all day in the Mill Café. The Varel mill itself can be visited on guided tours – a technical monument that provides an authentic insight into the Frisian milling tradition.
