Neighbourhood Christmas market in northwest Mainz with club stalls and stage programme
Mainz-Mombach, with its approximately 14,000 inhabitants, is one of Mainz's most populous districts. Characterised by a long tradition as a working-class and craft district, by the harbour, the glassworks, and a vibrant club scene, Mombach has retained a strong sense of local identity. The Mombach Christmas Market on the weekend before the first Sunday of Advent is a visible expression of this tradition: a market supported by local clubs, dedicated to community spirit, conviviality, and the promotion of local club activities.
Wooden stalls, decorated fir trees, and fairy lights line the area around the Lemmchen and along Mombach's main streets. Catering is entirely in the hands of local clubs: sports clubs serve mulled wine and hot drinks, the fire brigade provides bratwurst and fries, parish communities offer homemade soups, doughnuts, and coffee, and kindergartens and schools sell homemade goods for their class funds. Stalls selling crafts, Advent arrangements, nativity figures, honey, knitwear, and gift ideas from Mombach and Rheinhessen complete the offerings.
On a stage in the centre of the market, performances by choirs, brass ensembles, and school groups take place. The Mombach Men's Choir, the brass choir of the Protestant parish, and the children's choirs from primary schools and music clubs provide atmospheric contributions throughout the afternoon and evening. The highlight for families is the visit from St. Nicholas on Saturday, who distributes gifts to the children.
The Mombach Christmas Market sees itself as a deliberate counterpoint to large commercial Christmas markets: here, the focus is on community, volunteer engagement, regional products, and the promotion of club activities. The proceeds flow into Mombach's youth and club work. Visitors often combine a visit to the market with a stroll through the old village centre and a look at Mombach's local history around the historic glassworks.
The 2026 programme follows the established structure of a Mainz neighbourhood Christmas market. On Friday evening, the market opens with a ceremonial lighting of the candles and an initial concert. Saturday is dedicated to the Mombach clubs: all-day catering, St. Nicholas' visit in the afternoon, and an evening mulled wine atmosphere with live music. On Sunday, brass choirs, children's nativity plays, and community Advent singing characterise the afternoon, before the market concludes in the early evening. Stallholders include local sports clubs, the Mombach fire brigade, the Catholic and Protestant parish communities, daycare centres, schools, and regional craftspeople and beekeepers.
