Family spectacle with an interactive mobile city of games centred around Roman Trier in summer 2026
The Mobile City of Games "Römerstadt" is one of the playful highlights in the "40 Years of UNESCO World Heritage Trier" 2026 anniversary programme. It combines the concept of a family edutainment format with Trier's unique historical substance — the most important ancient Roman city north of the Alps.
For just under three weeks, from July 20 to August 7, 2026, the format will bring interactive game stations to Trier's city centre. The exact locations will be announced by the organiser in spring 2026 and are expected to be set up at prominent sites such as Hauptmarkt, Domfreihof, Porta Nigra forecourt, or at World Heritage sites like the Imperial Baths and the Amphitheatre.
The educational concept aims at an active appropriation of Roman history: Children slip into the roles of Roman citizens, craftsmen, legionaries, scribes, or market vendors. At mobile stations, they can try Roman writing on wax tablets, mint coins, practice archery, play Roman games like Latrunculi, participate in craft techniques, and try on Roman costumes.
The format is aimed at families with children of all ages as well as school classes during the summer holidays. The stations are supervised and designed so that even younger children can access them without prior knowledge. Free admission — the city of games is part of the City of Trier's free anniversary programme.
The premiere in the 2026 anniversary year is designed as a travelling format — the mobile stations can change location from day to day, thus involving different city districts and World Heritage sites.
The concept is accessible and free, specifically aimed at families during the summer holidays.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in spring. The structure follows a proven edutainment concept:
