Three days of medieval times, jousting tournament and camp life at the historic Ringwall in Gartlage
The Osnabrücker Ringwall in Gartlage has been the backdrop for one of Lower Saxony's most atmospheric medieval festivals since its sixth edition. On an area of around 3.5 hectares, a three-day spectacle unfolds from August 14th to 16th, 2026, making history tangible and attracting a broad audience from the Osnabrück, Münsterland, and Emsland regions.
The highlight of every festival edition is the jousting tournament, which brings together knights and horses in full armor several times a day. The international show group Reiter der vier Winde combines classic jousting with choreographed fire shows, acrobatic riding scenes, and dramatically narrated combat sequences. Spear throws, sword fights on horseback, and spectacular falls into the sand thrill a multi-generational audience year after year.
Between the camp tents, craftsmen and performers demonstrate historical professions in authentic attire: blacksmiths hammer at the fire, woodturners work on pole lathes, felt makers and leatherworkers showcase their techniques. Bow makers, coin minters, and candle dippers invite participation. Those interested in falconry can watch the birds of prey during demonstrations over the Ringwall.
Three stages and several camp areas ensure a dense musical program. With Lautenfeyn (Folk-Rock), Feuerdorn (Bagpipes and Drums), and Fielerley (Celtic-Irish sounds), three prominent bands from the German medieval scene are announced. The walking act Alejandro Gálvez Piedra adds a southern flair with stilts, fire, and acrobatics. Jugglers roam the grounds, storytellers and freelance combat performers entertain the crowds.
With deliberately low admission prices, the Medieval Market at the Ringwall positions itself as a family-friendly festival, equally appreciated by regular visitors, reenactment groups, and curious day guests.
The 2026 edition focuses on the proven mix of equestrian show, living crafts, and live music. The official lineup at mittelaltermarkt-osnabrueck.de confirms the bands Lautenfeyn, Feuerdorn, and Fielerley, as well as the Spanish walking act Alejandro Gálvez Piedra, for the sixth edition. The tournament arena is at the center of the grounds, surrounded by camp life with blacksmiths, bow makers, candle dippers, and falconry.
On all three festival days, show combats, the jousting tournament, stage concerts, and interactive stations alternate on an hourly basis. In the evenings, fire shows illuminate the grounds.
