Medieval market with jousting tournament, jesters, and crafts at the largest castle ruin in the Palatinate
Lichtenberg Castle, situated on a ridge above the village of Thallichtenberg in the Kusel district, is considered one of the largest castle complexes in southern Germany and the largest castle ruin in the Palatinate. With its vast area, three courtyards, the upper and lower castles, and its impressive location high above the West Palatinate highlands, it offers a spectacular backdrop for historical events. The annual Medieval Summer Spectacle has been utilizing this setting for almost two decades and has become a firm fixture in the calendar of the international medieval scene.
The spectacle is more than just a simple medieval market: it is a comprehensive staging of medieval life. Over forty market stalls present handcrafted goods — blacksmiths, leatherworkers, potters, felt makers, basket weavers, sword makers, and jewelers often demonstrate their skills live on-site. Camp groups from all over Germany and parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, and France set up their tents, offering insights into daily life from the 12th to 15th centuries. Knights, peasants, maids, servants, and minstrels bring the event to life.
The highlight of the program is the jousting tournament, where skilled riders in full armor compete against each other — jousting, saber fights on horseback, and show combats create spectacular scenes against the backdrop of the castle walls. In addition, jesters, fire-eaters, acrobats, and music groups present performances at various points throughout the castle during the day. A variety of medieval music ensembles play bagpipes, shawms, lutes, and hurdy-gurdies. Archery and crossbow shooting are available for hands-on activities — children can also test their accuracy here under supervision.
The catering is entirely in line with the historical staging: roast suckling pig, bread from a wood-fired oven, hearty stews from the cauldron, mead from clay mugs, and beer from medieval tankards are offered. Many visitors come in their own historical attire, which further enhances the atmosphere. In the evening, when the torches are lit and the campfires flicker, a particularly impressive mood is created.
The 2026 Summer Spectacle marks the 18th edition, consolidating Lichtenberg Castle's position as one of the most important medieval event venues in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Friends of TSG Burg Lichtenberg, in cooperation with Vehi Mercatus, one of Germany's leading medieval market agencies, ensures a program that combines historical authenticity with crowd-pleasing staging. The castle's backdrop, with its extensive courtyards, remnants of walls, and spectacular location above the West Palatinate highlands, is the true star.
