Traditional district fair of the Kirmesgesellschaft Metternicher Eule on the last weekend of August
The Metternicher Eulekärmes is a hallmark of the Koblenz district of Metternich. It owes its name to the owl, the local symbol of the Metternich residents, which lives on in the dialect word 'Eul'. Behind the festival is the Kirmesgesellschaft Metternicher Eule 1920 e.V., which has been preserving the customs, the Metternich dialect, and the social life of the district since 1920.
The venue for the Kärmes is the Metternicher Oberdorf, the historic center of the district. For several days, a festival ground is created here with catering stands, a marquee, amusement rides, and a stage. The family-friendly atmosphere is characteristic: generations come together, dialect songs and dialect speeches spice up the program, and the district's clubs host all guests.
Highlights include the beer tapping on Friday evening, the traditional Kirmesumzug (fair procession) with music bands and floats, the festive church service, the morning pint on Sunday morning, and the Kirmeskehraus (farewell party) on Monday. The Kirmesgesellschaft presents its own stage program each season with cover bands, party music, and dialect performances.
The Kirmesgesellschaft Metternicher Eule celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. It is one of several Koblenz district fair societies and is also involved in Carnival, district events, and the preservation of customs. Membership is open to all who feel connected to the district.
Metternich is located on the west bank of the Moselle and is a university location (Koblenz University of Applied Sciences). Despite urban growth, the village-like core around the parish church of St. Konrad has been preserved – and with it, the Kärmes as the social highlight of the year.
The Metternicher Eulekärmes 2026 will take place on the traditional date at the end of August. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years: opening on Friday, festival weekend with live music, Sunday procession, and winding down on Monday.
The festival is dedicated to district pride: dialect speeches, dialect songs, and the owl mascot shape the atmosphere. With the Kirmesgesellschaft Metternicher Eule, a custom is being preserved that has continuously connected generations since 1920.
