Merzig Summer of Culture

Concert Series Instead of a Single Event

The Merzig Summer of Culture is not a one-off festival, but a concert series running throughout the summer. From mid-June to the end of August, the Merzig district town's marketing department fills the central Altstadtplatz with regular open-air concerts. Free admission on all dates – a deliberate decision that makes the Summer of Culture attractive to families and non-concertgoers.

Diversity in Genre Spectrum

The program spans a wide musical spectrum: Rock and Pop covers share the stage with Schlager, Country, Reggae, Funk, and Jazz. The idea behind it: each Saturday evening aims to appeal to a different audience, ensuring that as many Merzig residents as possible have visited the event over the summer.

Opening 2026 with Heartland

The 2026 opening on Saturday, June 13th at 8 PM features the band Heartland with Modern Country songs. Heartland is an established Saarland cover band focusing on American Country and singer-songwriter classics – a choice that fits the relaxed summer evening style of the Summer of Culture.

"Merzig Plays On" as a Framework Program

The Summer of Culture is part of a larger summer event package from the city of Merzig called "Merzig spielt auf" (Merzig Plays On). This also includes the Sommerkirmes (Summer Funfair), the Merzig Children's Summer, the Street Food Festival, and the Hafenfest AHOI on the Saar River. Together, these formats distribute cultural offerings across the entire city – to the Altstadtplatz and into the 17 districts.

Local Sponsors Support the Format

The Summer of Culture is financed by the city marketing department in cooperation with regional sponsors – Sparkasse Merzig-Wadern, Südwestrundfunk, and several Merzig companies. This keeps admission free.
