Concert Series Instead of a Single Event
The Merzig Summer of Culture is not a one-off festival, but a concert series running throughout the summer. From mid-June to the end of August, the Merzig district town's marketing department fills the central Altstadtplatz with regular open-air concerts. Free admission on all dates – a deliberate decision that makes the Summer of Culture attractive to families and non-concertgoers.
Diversity in Genre Spectrum
The program spans a wide musical spectrum: Rock and Pop covers share the stage with Schlager, Country, Reggae, Funk, and Jazz. The idea behind it: each Saturday evening aims to appeal to a different audience, ensuring that as many Merzig residents as possible have visited the event over the summer.
Opening 2026 with Heartland
The 2026 opening on Saturday, June 13th at 8 PM features the band Heartland with Modern Country songs. Heartland is an established Saarland cover band focusing on American Country and singer-songwriter classics – a choice that fits the relaxed summer evening style of the Summer of Culture.
"Merzig Plays On" as a Framework Program
The Summer of Culture is part of a larger summer event package from the city of Merzig called "Merzig spielt auf" (Merzig Plays On). This also includes the Sommerkirmes (Summer Funfair), the Merzig Children's Summer, the Street Food Festival, and the Hafenfest AHOI on the Saar River. Together, these formats distribute cultural offerings across the entire city – to the Altstadtplatz and into the 17 districts.
Local Sponsors Support the Format
The Summer of Culture is financed by the city marketing department in cooperation with regional sponsors – Sparkasse Merzig-Wadern, Südwestrundfunk, and several Merzig companies. This keeps admission free.
Kultursommer Merzig — edition 2026
The Merzig city marketing department has announced the start of the 2026 Summer of Culture for Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at 8 PM. The band Heartland, performing Modern Country, will open the season on the Altstadtplatz.
In the following weeks, regional and national cover bands and original repertoire bands will perform – the detailed season schedule with all concert dates and bands will be published in May/June 2026 by the city marketing department at Villa Fuchs and on merzig.de.

Getting There
Merzig is located in the Merzig-Wadern district, about 45 km northwest of Saarbrücken. By car via the A8 (exit Merzig). By public transport from Saarbrücken Hbf with RB 71 to Merzig (approx. 35 min.). The Altstadtplatz is a 10-minute walk from the train station.
Admission
Free admission on all concert dates. Food and drinks available at on-site stalls at usual prices.
Tip
Combine your concert visit with a stroll through Merzig's city center or an excursion to the Saarschleife (Saar Loop) (15 min. drive).
