Wiblingen Monastery as a Festival Backdrop
Founded in 1093, the Benedictine Wiblingen Monastery — today part of the Ulm-Wiblingen district — offers a unique backdrop for the medieval spectacle with its baroque monastery complex and the world-famous library hall. From Thursday, May 14th, to Sunday, May 17th, 2026, südevent UG will bring the area to life with market stalls, stages, encampments, and activity areas.
Jugglers, Fire Shows, and Medieval Music
The program is at the heart of the spectacle: captivating jugglers entertain with juggling, acrobatics, and comedy; impressive fire shows ignite their magic under the baroque walls in the evening; medieval music groups play to the dance with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and shawm. Knights offer insights into medieval combat techniques and military equipment, while artisans demonstrate historical crafts — from bow makers to blacksmiths and potters.
Food and Drinks from Near and Far
On the market grounds, traders offer food and drinks as in medieval times: grilled chicken on a spit, pork knuckles, mushroom pans, mead (honey wine), beer specialties, and non-alcoholic elderflower syrup lemonades. Market stalls sell leather goods, clothing, jewelry, weapons, pottery, and herbal products — ideal as souvenirs or gifts.
Family Program and Children's Area
There is a dedicated children's area with hands-on activities: archery, pottery, medieval games, storytellers. Children can also dress up in medieval costumes and participate in stage activities. Families should allow two to three hours for a tour.
Ulm and Wiblingen
Wiblingen is a district of Ulm at the mouth of the Iller river into the Danube. Wiblingen Monastery — home to the current University Hospital of Ulm University — was founded in 1093 as a Benedictine monastery and rebuilt in baroque style in the 18th century. The monastery library, with its magnificent library hall, is considered one of the most beautiful Rococo libraries in the world and can be visited year-round. The medieval spectacle perfectly combines a monastery visit with a family-friendly festival.
