Atmospheric Christmas market in a medieval ambiance at the largest castle ruin in the Palatinate
The Medieval Christmas Market at Lichtenberg Castle is a journey to another time. Anyone who passes through the gate of the largest castle ruin in the Palatinate leaves not only everyday life but also the present behind. In the courtyards, amidst the ruined walls, and within the castle vaults, historically costumed market vendors, musicians, craftspeople, and innkeepers present a Christmas program that forgoes electric lighting, relying instead on torchlight, braziers, and candlelight. This consistent staging makes the market a unique experience in its atmosphere.
The festive opening on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM is a spectacle in itself. A herald in medieval attire announces the market's opening, followed by the castle's cannoneers firing their cannons, officially opening the market. This staging is not just a program item but a symbolic prelude that transports visitors into the world of the Middle Ages.
Stalls offering handcrafted goods, often made live on-site, are spread throughout the market: blacksmiths work iron by open fire into tools, swords, and jewelry; leatherworkers, felt makers, potters, basket weavers, and glassblowers demonstrate their skills; jewelers sell pieces made from silver, bronze, bone, and semi-precious stones. Medieval music groups with bagpipes, shawms, hurdy-gurdies, and drums roam the grounds, providing the acoustic backdrop. The food comes from cauldrons over open fires and wood-fired ovens: suckling pig on a spit, bread from a wood-fired oven, hearty stews, roasted sausages, and sweet specialties. Drinks include mead, mulled wine, hot wine, hot beer, and non-alcoholic hot beverages served from clay jugs.
As dusk falls in the late afternoon, the torches are lit, and the glow from the braziers illuminates the castle walls, an atmosphere emerges that many visitors describe as "unreally beautiful." The combination of historic architecture, medieval staging, and pre-Christmas spirit is unique in this form in the Palatinate and attracts thousands of visitors from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and neighboring regions every year.
The 2026 edition marks the 22nd year of this unique Christmas market. The Förderverein TSG Burg Lichtenberg has built a reputation over more than two decades for its consistently staged medieval events, and the November Christmas market serves as the association's year-end highlight. Several thousand visitors are expected from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg, and neighboring federal states.
