Medieval spectacle with Vikings, Landsknechts, sword fights, and fire show by the village pond
The Medieval Camp Gathering Timmel transports its visitors to another era. At the idyllically situated Timmel village pond – part of the expansive Großefehn municipality in the Aurich district – around 30 reenactment groups with over 150 active participants set up their camps. The spectrum ranges from Vikings and early medieval clans to late medieval Landsknechts.
In the camp, life is as it was back then: blacksmithing, cooking over a campfire, dyeing with plant-based colors, leatherwork, bow making. Sword fights demonstrate historical fencing techniques, often elaborately staged into spectacular show duels. Medieval folk bands play on stage with hurdy-gurdies, bagpipes, and shawms. A fire show provides a luminous highlight in the evening.
Visitors can try historical crafts in open workshops – archery, felting, blacksmithing, medieval games. This makes the camp not just a spectacle, but also an immersive, hands-on experience. Ideal for families and anyone who wants to combine historical interest with active participation.
In parallel, the Pentecost Market at Timmel Harbor (May 23–26) runs with stalls, carousels, and family activities. The passenger ship MS Gretje offers boat trips on the Großefehn canal system. For visitors, it's a packed, varied Pentecost weekend in a unique East Frisian setting.
The detailed programs of the reenactment groups, the show schedule for sword fights and fire shows, as well as the medieval folk bands will be published by Großefehn Tourism in good time before Pentecost 2026 on grossefehn-tourismus.de.
