Six weeks of live music in the heart of Bad Neustadt's historic old town
The Marktplatzsommer Bad Neustadt is the long-running summer open-air event in the Rhön town of Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, state of Bavaria. For six weeks – traditionally from early July to late August – there is a free concert almost every evening on the historic market square. The organizer is the municipal Cultural Office, headed by Michael Schönmeier.
A typical Marktplatzsommer evening follows a clear rhythm: From 5:30 PM, the catering stands open on the market square – Franconian sausage variations, small dishes, Franconian wines, beer from a regional brewery, and non-alcoholic drinks. At 7:00 PM, the live concert begins on a simple stage erected in the center of the square. The program changes daily; a colorful mix of singer-songwriters, jazz combos, folk bands, Latin ensembles, cover bands, and folk music groups shapes the lineup.
The market square setting is the festival's unique selling point: The late Gothic town hall, the Catholic city church of St. John the Baptist, the Renaissance burgher houses, and the striking defensive towers of the former city fortifications frame the square and bathe it in golden light in the evening. This atmosphere makes the Marktplatzsommer stand out from the usual festival calendar.
The Marktplatzsommer is part of a dense summer cultural calendar in Bad Neustadt. In parallel, the Picnic Concerts (July 5 - August 30, 2026), the Botenlauben Festival cycle, and the large City Festival (July 30 - August 1, 2026) are taking place. This makes the town a continuous cultural stage from early July to late August.
A special concern of the Cultural Office is its accessibility: no admission fee, no reservation, no tickets – just come to the market square, stand at one of the high tables or bring a chair, order a Franconian sausage platter, and listen to the music. This makes the Marktplatzsommer a meeting point for all generations and social classes in the city.
From July 9 to August 20, 2026, the Bad Neustadt Cultural Office will once again transform the historic market square into an open-air stage. For six weeks, live concerts will shape the summer in the Rhön town – a dense program of jazz combos, singer-songwriters, folk bands, Latin ensembles, cover bands, and folk music groups.
Every evening, the catering stands open at 5:30 PM, and the concert begins at 7:00 PM. The specific performances will be published by the Cultural Office in the city's event calendar in good time. Free admission, no reservation required.
