Wine festival on the Mainz Rhine banks around Ascension Day with 25 wineries from Rheinhessen
The Mainzer WeinUfer is an essential part of the Mainz event calendar and is considered one of the most beautiful wine festival openings in the region. The venue is the Rhine embankment between Theodor-Heuss-Brücke and Kaisertor, directly in front of the Electoral Palace — a spectacular backdrop with a view of Wiesbaden-Mainz-Kostheim on the opposite bank and the Rhine traffic passing by. The organizer is mainzplus Citymarketing GmbH, which also manages other major Mainz events.
25 wineries from Rheinhessen, Germany's largest contiguous wine-growing region, which surrounds Mainz to the south and west, gather at the festival grounds. The selection includes established family wineries as well as younger career changers and smaller producers. Typical Rheinhessen grape varieties are represented — Riesling, Silvaner, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder — and increasingly also natural wine cuvées and well-made rosé wines.
The accompanying offer is provided by 23 food stalls: grilled Spundekäs rolls, stuffed vine leaves, Flammkuchen, Mainzer Handkäs mit Musik, vegetarian options, and upscale street food concepts. Regional bands play live music on the main stage in the evenings, ranging from singer-songwriters to Bossa Nova and Funk. A central program innovation is the Pink Sunday: on the festival Sunday, the entire riverbank area is illuminated in pink, with rosé specialties and rosé cocktails taking center stage in the pavilions.
For a more in-depth experience, the organizer offers the WeinUferWalk ticket: for 22 euros, guests receive a printed fabric bag, a wine glass, and nine tasting tokens, which can be used to sample wines at participating stands. The format captures the city's vibe: young, urban, wine-loving, yet also tradition-conscious.
The WeinUfer 2026 opens on Thursday at 1 PM and closes on Sunday at 10 PM. The longest opening hours are on Friday and Saturday until midnight. Live music starts in the late afternoon each day and culminates between 8 PM and 10 PM. The exact live program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Thursday, a family-friendly start on Ascension Day; Friday and Saturday, extended evening programs with regional bands; Sunday, Pink Sunday with pink lighting and rosé specialties.
Live acts will be announced via mainzer-weinufer.de.
