Classical festival in the historic churches of Mainz city center with opening by Deutsche Radio Philharmonie
The Mainzer Musiksommer is Mainz's established classical festival and ranks among the most distinguished summer offerings of classical music in Rhineland-Palatinate. Organized by Konzertdirektion Mainz Klassik, the festival programs a repertoire over four weeks that spans from Baroque to late Romantic periods, from solo chamber music to orchestral works, specifically targeting a sophisticated urban and supra-regional audience.
The program design thrives on its exceptional venues. St. Stephan, with its world-renowned blue Chagall windows, forms one of Germany's most spiritually and aesthetically impressive concert locations. The Seminarkirche, intimate and acoustically excellent, is ideal for chamber music and small vocal ensembles. St. Ignaz, a baroque jewel of Mainz city center, offers a rich soundscape for organ and choral works. The Dom St. Martin, the city's thousand-year-old landmark, is used for major vocal and symphonic works. The Fürst-von-Bismarck-Saal in the former Kupferberg sparkling wine cellars hosts the stylistically broadening finale.
The 2026 Opening in St. Stephan is a program highlight: the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie performs works by Georg Muffat (Baroque master with French-Italian stylistic connections), Jan Dismas Zelenka (Bohemian Baroque master), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Joseph Haydn. A program line that makes visible the roots of the Viennese classical tradition in Central European Baroque.
The festival traditionally concludes with a Jazz and World Music Finale in the Kupferberg-Saal — a deliberate arc connecting classical tradition with the present of improvised and global music. The Mainzer Musiksommer is an event for lovers of great concert tradition and extraordinary spaces.
The complete 2026 program will be published on mainz-klassik.de. The structure follows the established cornerstones of previous years: opening concert with a large orchestra (2026 Deutsche Radio Philharmonie in St. Stephan), followed by weeks of chamber music evenings in Seminarkirche, organ concerts and vocal works in St. Ignaz and Dom St. Martin, supplementary solo recitals, and a stylistically broadening jazz and world music finale in the Kupferberg-Saal. Typically two to three concerts per week.
