Traditional district carnival parade on Carnival Sunday in southwest Mainz with a new route in 2026
Bretzenheim, with around 18,000 inhabitants, is one of Mainz's most populous districts and boasts a vibrant carnival tradition of its own. Several clubs, primarily the local guards and carnival societies, organize the parade on Carnival Sunday, which, after the start of street carnival on Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival) and the children's and youth masked parade on Saturday, marks the next major open-air highlight of the festive days in Mainz.
For the 2026 campaign, the route of the Bretzenheim parade has been revised. The background for this includes organizational adjustments, increased safety for participants and spectators, and better audience distribution along the route. The parade sequence leads from the assembly point through the town center to the dispersal point, incorporating central squares and streets of the district. Guards, music bands, walking groups, children's groups, and floats will parade through Bretzenheim starting at 2:11 PM on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
The Bretzenheim parade is part of the unbroken Mainz Carnival tradition. Greetings like "Helau" accompany the parade groups, confetti, flowers, and small throwing items fly into the audience, and the guards present their dances and standards from the indoor events of the campaign. Unlike the Rose Monday parade, which claims the entire city, the district parade remains manageable and focuses on the neighborly experience.
For families with children who wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of Mainz city center, the district parades in Bretzenheim, Drais, Gonsenheim, Finthen, and Mombach offer a more relaxed alternative. The distances to the train station or tram stop are short, the audience is primarily from the district itself, and after the parade, people often head directly to one of the carnival houses or family celebrations.
The Bretzenheim parade remains one of the largest and most popular district parades of the 2026 Mainz campaign and is entirely dedicated to the campaign motto "100 Years of Mainzer Hofsänger". The exact order of the parade groups and the final route will be published in the weeks before Carnival by the local carnival clubs and the City of Mainz.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
