Art festival in Greven's city center on May 16 and 17, 2026 from 1 PM to 6 PM — Giant banners by regional artists, vernissage, children's flea market, Sunday shopping
The Maifest "Greven paints colorful" is one of the most original city festivals in the Münsterland region. Instead of traditional stage programs, the city center of Greven transforms into an open-air gallery: Large-format art banners by regional artists hang along Marktstraße, Kirchstraße, Martinistraße, and Niederort. The next edition will take place from May 16 to 17, 2026 — daily from 1 PM to 6 PM. The concept has been successful since 2016 and is a deliberate alternative festival format: art as a neighborhood experience rather than a city spectacle.
The centerpiece: regional artists from the Münsterland present their works as large banners, which are hung in the city center streets. This turns the entire city center into a gallery — not a single room, but the entire public urban space. The banners have formats that are usually only showcased in large museum halls.
Festival opening: the vernissage at the market square with the presentation of the participating artists, their works, and the concepts behind the festival. Here, the artists talk about their banner works.
On the Kirchwand (church wall) of Greven's parish church hang traditional local art installations — a connection to the sacred and to Greven's history. A deliberate accent alongside the modern banners.
A shop window on Marktstraße has been a growing photo collage of all previous festival editions since 2016. A visual history of the initiative, with new photos added each year — 2026 will document the 11th year of the initiative.
On Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM, a children's flea market takes place in the city center — toys, books, children's clothing, games. Interested vendors must register online via localTicketing or directly with Greven Marketing about a month in advance.
Greven's stores are open on Sunday from 1 PM to 6 PM — boutiques, bookstores, toy stores. Shopping with a festive atmosphere.
Food stalls are spread throughout the city center offering festival classics: sausages, potato pancakes, fries, crêpes, soft drinks, beer, and wine. Local restaurateurs also present their specialties.
Greven is a town in the Münsterland region, in the Steinfurt district (North Rhine-Westphalia), located north of Münster. With about 38,000 inhabitants, Greven is medium-sized, with a manageable historic town center and an active city center initiative through Greven Marketing e.V. The initiative organizes the Maifest and several other city center events. The Münsterland is an agriculturally characterized region with farms, water mills, and its own cultural traditions — art festivals like "Greven paints colorful" fit into this cultural climate.
