May Night and May Festival in the district — Tradition since 1905
The Maifest Arnoldsweiler is one of the traditional customs events in the Düren district. The organizing Maigesellschaft Arnoldsweiler (Jkg 1905) carries its founding year in its name — the festival thus dates back over 120 years. From April 30 to May 3, 2026, the Rhenish May tradition will be celebrated in this Düren district: Maypole raising, May Night celebrations, and marquee program.
Arnoldsweiler is a district of Düren in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, approximately 5 km northwest of the city center. With around 3,500 inhabitants, it is a manageable village within the district town — and it is precisely in such small structures that customs are most strongly preserved. The Maigesellschaft Jkg 1905 has been the custodian of the May tradition since its founding and also organizes the Schützenfest and other traditional events.
The Maifest is a typical Rhenish custom — widespread especially in the Cologne Bay, the Bergisches Land, and the Eifel region. Young May bachelors raise the Maypole (a decorated fir tree), elect their May Queen, and celebrate the transition from winter to summer. In earlier times, it was also an initiation tradition — young men were “allowed” to be admitted into the community of adults with the Maifest.
Arnoldsweiler is not the only Düren district with a Maifest. The regional overview from DN-News 2026 lists further dates: Mariaweiler, Echtz, Niederzier, and other places celebrate concurrently. This makes the Düren district one of the “densest” May regions in North Rhine-Westphalia — customs meet here with remarkable density.
The 2026 edition runs in two phases: first May Night on April 30, then the marquee weekend on May 2–3 on the Driesch.
May Night free. Marquee: catering for a fee.
By car: A4 to Düren, then follow signs for Arnoldsweiler. Parking around the Driesch and Church Square.
May Night on April 30 at the Church Square: free. Marquee admission: usually free or a small fee.
May Night on the evening of April 30 for the traditional Maypole raising. Saturday evening for dancing and live music in the marquee.
For those who want to experience Rhenish customs atmosphere: May Night is authentic and atmospheric. Family tip: Sunday morning pint (Frühschoppen).
