Traditional Maibaumaufstellung in Cremlingen on the night before May 1st (Walpurgisnacht)
The Maibaumaufstellung is one of the oldest spring customs in Europe. A tall, decorated tree – often a spruce with a green crown and colorful ribbons – is erected on the village square on the night before May 1st or on May 1st itself, symbolically marking the beginning of the warm season. In Lower Saxony, this custom is still practiced with great self-evidence in many communities.
April 30th – Walpurgisnacht – is, according to folk belief, the night when witches gather on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. In Cremlingen, there is little sign of this dark side: instead, a cheerful and festive atmosphere characterizes the Maibaumaufstellung. The Cremlingen clubs prepare the tree, decorate it with wreaths and ribbons, and erect it in a coordinated effort under the guidance of experienced members.
Accompanying the actual raising, there is catering by the clubs, sometimes music, and always plenty of conversation. Anyone spending April 30th in Cremlingen experiences a mix of traditional ritual and spring festival that appeals to many generations. Families with children, older residents of Cremlingen, young adults, and guests from the surrounding area come together.
The Maibaumaufstellung concludes the early spring in Cremlingen and ushers in the summer. This is followed by Pentecost programs, village flea markets, community brunches, and other events. The Maypole traditionally remains standing for several days or weeks, permanently shaping the appearance of Cremlingen's village center.
In 2026, the Cremlingen clubs will once again organize the Maibaumaufstellung in the usual manner. The exact start time and location will be communicated via cremlingen-online.de and the municipality.
Erecting a Maypole is not trivial – it requires well-rehearsed teams, clear instructions, and caution. That is precisely why it is also a community-building event: those who participate in the raising become part of a long Cremlingen tradition.
The exact program for 2026 with times and program points will be published by the Cremlingen clubs.
