Spring Magic Above the Saale Valley

The Leuchtenburg Spring Magic is one of Thuringia's most impressive spring events. For several weeks, the team from the Stiftung Leuchtenburg (Leuchtenburg Foundation) transforms the medieval castle complex near Seitenroda — high above the Saale valley and the town of Kahla in the Saale-Holzland district — into a colorful spring backdrop. Across approximately 10,000 square meters of castle grounds, detailed themed rooms are created, each adopting a new motto annually.

2026 Motto: "Views Through, Views Into, Views Out, Views Down"

The 2026 edition plays with the act of seeing itself. Historical and newly designed window frames will be strategically placed to draw visitors' attention to landscape views of the Saale valley, architectural details of the castle, and hidden installations. This is complemented by a rustic cottage garden aesthetic: flowers, natural materials, wood, climbing plants, and numerous birdhouses — some of which are accessible — create a stage for a spring experience for all senses.

Program Points and Highlights

Around Easter (April 3-6, 2026), the program will be particularly dense: an ecumenical Way of the Cross, actor Birger Markuse as a wandering performance, pony rides with Black Forest horses, and planting a coffee pot together with the team. On April 11 and 12, the Day of Thuringian Porcelain follows with artist Bettina Thieme and live demonstrations. Every Sunday at 2 pm, organ concerts will be heard in the Porcelain Church. Daily castle tours start at 11 am, and during the Thuringian Easter holidays, additionally at 2 pm.

Leuchtenburg — "Queen of the Saale Valley"

The Leuchtenburg near Seitenroda is considered one of the most beautiful hilltop castles in Central Germany and bears the epithet "Queen of the Saale Valley." In recent years, the Stiftung Leuchtenburg has developed the site into an experiential destination centered around porcelain and architecture — with the spectacular Steg der Wünsche (Bridge of Wishes) and the Porcelain Church as its landmarks. The newly opened panoramic path around the castle provides additional space for views in 2026; a new funicular railway is planned to connect the castle from the valley in the summer/autumn.

State of Thuringia and Saale-Holzland District

The Leuchtenburg is located on the outskirts of the town of Kahla in the Saale-Holzland district (State of Thuringia), less than ten kilometers south of Jena. Its location makes the Spring Magic an ideal excursion destination for a day trip from Jena, Weimar, or Erfurt — car, train, and hiking trails along the Saale valley provide access to the castle equally.

Spring Magic Leuchtenburg — edition 2026

The Leuchtenburg Spring Magic 2026 runs from March 21 to May 10 under the motto "Views Through, Views Into, Views Out, Views Down." Historical window frames direct the gaze towards landscape and architecture, cottage garden installations transform the 10,000 sqm castle grounds, and birdhouses adorn the path. Highlights: Easter program April 3-6, Day of Thuringian Porcelain April 11-12, Sunday organ concerts at 2 pm.

2026 Edition — A Play on Views

The 2026 season focuses on the act of seeing itself: "Views Through, Views Into, Views Out, Views Down" is the motto. Strategically placed window frames — some historical, others newly designed — frame landscape views of the Saale valley, castle architectural details, and hidden installations. The cottage garden inspiration with flowers, wood, and climbing plants, as well as numerous birdhouses, accompanies the tour.

The panoramic path around the castle has reopened; a new funicular railway is planned to connect the castle from the valley in summer/autumn 2026.
