Cultural Festival of Structural Change
The Lausitz Festival was launched in 2020 and sees itself as an artistic response to the structural change in the Lausitz region – an area undergoing fundamental economic and social reorientation as it gradually phases out lignite mining. The festival uses the tension between industrial history, village tradition, and future visions as a creative friction surface. It takes place at venues in Brandenburg (Cottbus, Senftenberg, Schwarzheide) and Saxony (Görlitz, Bautzen, Hoyerswerda, Bad Muskau).
Festival Period 2026 — August 25 to September 13
The 2026 festival season runs for three weeks from August 25 to September 13. During this time, concerts, theatre evenings, readings, film screenings, and discourse formats will be held at various venues in the Lausitz region. The festival's headquarters are in Görlitz.
BASF Kulturhaus Schwarzheide
The BASF Kulturhaus in Schwarzheide is one of the most traditional cultural centres in the Lausitz region. It was opened as the 'Kulturhaus der Werktätigen' (Cultural Centre for the Working People) – typical post-war GDR architecture, now renovated and used for modern events. The large hall, with its 800 m² of event space, can accommodate concerts, theatre productions, and larger festival formats.
