Carnival 1838 – A Kaiserslautern Tradition

The Karnevalverein Kaiserslautern 1838 is one of the oldest carnival associations in the Palatinate and the oldest in Kaiserslautern. For 188 years, the association has maintained the Kaiserslautern carnival tradition, which sets its own Palatinate accent between Rhenish carnival, influenced by Mainz and Cologne, and the more Southwestern Alemannic Fastnacht tradition. The Gala-Prunksitzung is the association's most important major event in the season's calendar and is considered the social highlight of the Kaiserslautern carnival season.

The Fruchthalle as a Venue

The choice of the Fruchthalle as the venue lends the session a special, festive character. The historic hall, with its rich wooden ceiling, wall paintings, and acoustically excellent concert hall architecture, is normally reserved for classical concerts and high-profile events. For the KVK Gala-Prunksitzung, the hall is transformed into a festive carnival hall – with elaborate stage decorations, table seating, and an atmosphere that oscillates between solemn formality and exuberant carnival merriment.

City Princess Jenny I.

The reigning City Princess Jenny I. is the focus of the 2025/2026 season. She will be ceremonially presented with her retinue at the Gala-Sitzung. The City Princess represents the Kaiserslautern carnival tradition throughout the entire season – from the opening on November 11th to Ash Wednesday – and attends numerous official engagements. Her introduction at the Gala-Sitzung is one of the emotional highlights of the evening.

Program of the Session

The multi-hour program follows the classic structure of a Prunksitzung: satirical speeches (Büttenreden) with political and social satire, dance troupes with marching and show dance performances, musical show acts with carnival hits and Palatinate songs, contributions from guest speakers and dance groups from friendly associations, and of course, the ceremonial appearances of the Elferrat (council of eleven) and the City Princess. The evening is accompanied by a carnival band and traditional catering with Saumagen rolls and Palatinate beverages.
