Traditional rowing regatta with fishing boats in Brake's inner harbour β Opening event of the Maritime Festival Week 2026
The Kutterpullen is a North German harbour tradition with a long history: In open fishing boats β the 'Kuttern' β teams compete against each other in a rowing regatta. In Brake's inner harbour (Unterweser), the Kutterpullen has established itself as a popular harbour festival over many years. In 2026, the event will be part of the newly designed Maritime Festival Week for the 170th City Anniversary and will serve as the festive opening event on Saturday, August 22.
Teams from clubs, companies, and leisure groups from the Wesermarsch and neighbouring regions compete in the Kutterpullen. Using oars or sculls, they cover the set distance in the harbour basin β in heats, semi-finals, and a grand finale. The powerful synchronized work of the rowing teams, the cheering from the quay, and the maritime backdrop make the Kutterpullen a special sporting spectacle.
A typical harbour festival atmosphere arises around the regatta. Food stalls, bratwurst stands, fish specialities, and drinks provide culinary catering. Shanty choirs or brass bands provide musical accompaniment. The public on the quay experiences the competition up close.
The Kutterpullen officially opens the Maritime Festival Week of the city of Brake. Programme organisers, sponsors, city representatives, and the tourism association use the occasion for official greetings, honours, and the presentation of the challenge trophies to the winning teams. The subsequent nine-day festival week continues the maritime tradition with further programme items.
Access to the harbour area and the competition is free. Food and special offers are paid for on-site.
The Maritime Festival Week of the city of Brake kicks off with the Kutterpullen 2026. The exact programme β number of teams, heat and final times, accompanying music, and catering options β will be published by the organiser in the summer.
In the previous year, the tourism association and the city organised the Kutterpullen as part of the Inner Harbour Festival. In 2026, the event will be prominently positioned for the first time as a standalone opening day of the festival week.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the tourism association in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
