Open-air concert series in Kusel from June to August at various venues
While many smaller towns scale back their cultural activities during the summer months, the town of Kusel takes the opposite approach: with the Kuseler Sommermusik, it has established a format that elevates the summer months of June, July, and August into the main season. The concert series uses the warm evenings, longer days, and inviting town squares for open-air concerts and indoor events with a summer flair. In the 2025 edition, the programme comprised around eighteen events – a remarkable volume for a town of about 5,000 inhabitants.
The Sommermusik is spread across various venues in the town, utilising Kusel's diverse spaces. The Rotenturmwiese, a green area on the outskirts of town, is suitable for larger open-air concerts with a picnic atmosphere. The Eiscafé San Marco offers a Mediterranean setting in its courtyard for smaller concerts. The KINETT cultural centre is the town's year-round cultural heart and hosts concerts requiring an indoor ambiance. Additional venues may be added depending on the programme.
The programme of the Kuseler Sommermusik covers a broad stylistic spectrum. Jazz combos and big bands from the region, classical ensembles, pop and rock cover bands, dialect acts from the Palatinate, and occasionally folk ensembles from neighbouring countries are featured. This diversity aims to appeal to as many tastes as possible, making the Sommermusik a cultural offering for the whole family.
The series traditionally concludes with the Dorffest Bledesbach (Bledesbach village festival), which was held on August 30 and 31 the previous year and rounds off the Sommermusik summer. The mix of a concert series with high-quality acts and a concluding village festival is characteristic of the concept and shows the close integration of the Sommermusik with local festival culture.
The 2026 series continues the successful concept of previous years. The town of Kusel and the participating organisers are preparing a programme that, on the one hand, provides performance opportunities for local music scenes and, on the other hand, brings nationally known acts to the district capital. The 2025 edition included 18 events from June to August, and a similar volume is expected in 2026.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the town of Kusel in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Around 18 concerts and events spread over three summer months. Open-air concerts on the Rotenturmwiese, more intimate events in the courtyard of the Eiscafé San Marco, indoor concerts at the KINETT cultural centre.
Jazz: Combos and big bands from the region. Classical: Chamber music ensembles, possibly also the Westpfälzisches Sinfonieorchester. Pop and Rock: Cover bands, singer-songwriters, regional acts. Dialect: Palatinate comedy and dialect music. Folk: Ensembles from Germany and neighbouring countries.
The series traditionally ends with the Dorffest Bledesbach on the last weekend of August. In 2025, this took place on August 30 and 31; a comparable closing date is expected for 2026.
