40 Years of Kunsthalle Emden

Founded in 1986 by publisher Henri Nannen, the Kunsthalle Emden is one of North Germany's most important private art institutions. Its collection comprises over a thousand works from Classical Modernism and contemporary art, focusing on German Expressionism, New Objectivity, and current art. The 2026 anniversary year will be celebrated with a major retrospective of its own collection, alongside parallel special exhibitions.

Anniversary Exhibition 'Bilder, die wir lieben'

From April 26, 2026, to May 2, 2027, the exhibition 'Bilder, die wir lieben. 40 Jahre Kunsthalle Emden' will showcase a curated selection from the collection. The exhibition is designed as a reflective presentation of works, combining art historical highlights with institutional memories and audience favourites from four decades.

Parallel Special Exhibitions

'Misha Kuball. eight planets, one star, one world' (April 26 – August 2, 2026) is dedicated to current installation art. 'AM HAFEN' (March 21 – August 2, 2026) thematically incorporates the city's maritime location, serving as a curatorial response to the collection's geographical identity.

'Langer Kunstabend' as Accompanying Format

The monthly 'Langer Kunstabend' (first Tuesday of the month, 5 PM to 9 PM) is particularly enhanced in the 2026 anniversary year. Free admission, a guided tour at 6 PM, and special events at 7 PM are regularly offered. This format is funded by the Aloys Wobben Foundation and is a crucial component of the Kunsthalle's accessible outreach activities.
