Multi-day cultural program in Unkel centered around the wine and heritage festival, featuring galleries, readings, and concerts.
Unkel defines itself as a 'cultural city' with two essential pillars: a distinct wine and heritage tradition on the one hand, and an unusually dense scene of artists and galleries on the other. Both pillars come together in September: The traditional wine and heritage festival (Sept 4–6) forms the popular kickoff; the 'KUNST und WEINTAGE' (Sept 5–13) extend and deepen the program with a cultural week.
Over the years, several independent galleries have established themselves in Unkel, showcasing painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography. During the KUNST und WEINTAGE, they open their current exhibitions with extended hours and special events such as artist talks, vernissages, or workshops.
Readings in historic rooms—Adenauer House, Willy Brandt Forum, civic buildings, churches—and small concerts (singer-songwriter, classical, jazz, acoustic) complement the program. The connection with the wine aspect creates an atmosphere where culture and enjoyment come together—a reading with a wine tasting, a concert with a winemaker's talk.
While the wine and heritage festival ends on September 6th, the KUNST und WEINTAGE continue until September 13th—a full week of quiet cultural activity that draws day-trippers and overnight guests to the town and extends the season for Unkel's gastronomy and hotels.
Those seeking a large-event atmosphere will be better served by the wine and heritage festival; those seeking culture in a relaxed atmosphere, with time for conversations and encounters, will find their format at the KUNST und WEINTAGE.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the KUNST und WEINTAGE. The program will be published by the cultural city of Unkel in the weeks leading up to September. Galleries and artists register their program points with the organizer, resulting in a comprehensive program booklet.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer of 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Gallery openings mostly free. Individual readings, concerts, or workshops may incur a contribution towards costs; details in the program booklet.
