About Krabbenkutter-Regatta

The Krabbenkutter-Regatta Fedderwardersiel is one of the most traditional harbour festivals on the Lower Saxony North Sea coast. For its 52nd edition from July 31 to August 2, 2026, the active crab cutter harbour of Fedderwardersiel will transform into a three-day venue for cutter races, crab peeling, music, and maritime camaraderie. The event is organised by Tourismus-Service Butjadingen (TSB). The regatta between the characteristic crab cutters, which navigate the Wadden Sea in everyday life, is a unique sporting and cultural experience. Admission to the harbour area is free.

Krabbenkutter-Regatta Fedderwardersiel — Maritime Tradition in an Active Fishing Harbour

The Krabbenkutter-Regatta Fedderwardersiel is one of the most distinctive harbour festivals on the Lower Saxony North Sea coast. With its 52nd edition in 2026, the festival looks back on a tradition spanning over five decades. The venue is the harbour of Fedderwardersiel — one of the few remaining active crab cutter harbours in Lower Saxony and a landmark of the municipality of Butjadingen.

Crab Cutters Under Racing Flags

The heart of the event is the Krabben-Kutterrennen (crab cutter race), where the crab cutters, which normally navigate the Wadden Sea, compete in a sporting contest. The crews compete against each other in various classes, either by rowing or by motor — the exact format varies between editions. For spectators on the quay, it creates a unique spectacle: the robust working ships as actors in a sporty, festive event.

Crab Peeling and Specialities

A second highlight is the Krabbenpulen (crab peeling) — participants compete to peel the most North Sea crabs as quickly as possible. What is a test of patience at breakfast becomes a sporting competition with an audience here. For those not interested in competing, the snack stands offer fresh crab rolls and North German fish specialities.

Music and Harbour Festival

Over three days, a typical harbour festival atmosphere with live music, sea shanty choir performances, and marquee events unfolds in the harbour. Stalls with maritime decorations, souvenirs, and handicrafts complement the programme. The backdrop of moored crab cutters, the sluice system, and the vast North Sea landscape make the festival a photogenic attraction.

Families and Travellers

For holidaymakers on the North Sea coast, the regatta is a must-attend event in August. Families from the Wesermarsch region, from Bremen and Bremerhaven, as well as international guests from Center Parcs and the region's holiday parks, come to the three-day harbour festival.

Free Admission

Access to the harbour area and the regatta is free. Food, drinks, and market goods are paid for on-site. The organiser is Tourismus-Service Butjadingen.
