Königsschießen Ottenstein

The Königsschießen is the highlight of the shooting year in many Lower Saxony villages. In Ottenstein, on the Ottenstein plateau, this tradition is also cherished with great dedication. The Ottenstein Shooting Club determines its dignitary annually, and the entire village participates.

Tradition with a Long History

The Königsschießen is a tradition with a history spanning centuries. Originally stemming from the 'Vogelschießen' (bird shooting), where a wooden bird was shot at, the competition has evolved into a modernized form that, at its core, preserves the traditional character. The best marksman or markswoman is proclaimed King or Queen.

Course of Events at the Sports Field

From 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the Königsschießen takes place on the Ottenstein sports field. Shooters compete in disciplines such as rifle or pistol shooting, depending on the club's specific rules. An expert jury evaluates the shots, and the results are determined by the end of the afternoon.

Convivial Setting

The shooting is accompanied by a convivial atmosphere. Club members, families, and guests gather at the sports field, with drinks and snacks provided for culinary accompaniment. The atmosphere is familial, the competition sporting, and the day as a whole a piece of village culture.

Royal Dignity and Significance

Whoever becomes King or Queen assumes a representative role for one year. This dignity is highly regarded and worn with pride. It connects the person with the club's history and makes them the visible representative of the shooting club for one year.
