Subculture festival "free & outdoors" in Eschholzpark Stühlinger
Knutstock is the counter-model to the region's large, commercial festivals: non-profit, grassroots organized, curated by the Kule Knut e.V. association with dozens of volunteers. What you won't find here: sponsor logos on every square meter, commercial food trucks with premium prices, headliner acts for marketing purposes. What you will find: a two-day open-air experience fueled by the energy of the Freiburg scene.
The 2026 lineup showcases the breadth of Knutstock's programming. Brasilikum brings Afro-Brazilian percussion to Eschholzpark — drums, dance, polyrhythms. Cosmic Mints plays psychedelic rock in the style of the late 60s, with a modern sound. Charlie Fonk delivers danceable funk and soul. Alongside them, nine other acts from the Breisgau, Markgräflerland, Alsace, and all of Europe — indie, folk, reggae, dub, experimental electronic.
Knutstock is not just about concerts, but active participation. 2026 workshop offerings: Graffiti (with spray cans and a legal wall), Screen Printing (take-home T-shirt printing), Rap (rhyme workshop for beginners and advanced), Breakdance (with a dance trainer from the Freiburg scene). All workshops are free and open to all age groups.
The Knutstock Table Tennis Tournament is a mini-institution in itself — sign up on-site and compete over two days in a knockout system for the Knutstock traveling trophy. Alongside this, information booths: climate justice, anti-racist initiatives, local associations, neighborhood work. A festival that also sees itself as a meeting space for progressive initiatives.
Several local partners provide catering: wood-fired pizza (mobile pizzeria), vegan currywurst and burgers, Georgian specialties (Khachapuri, Khinkali, Lobio), crêpes, wraps. Prices are moderate — no festival surcharge, but city-level pricing.
Eschholzpark in Freiburg's Stühlinger district is a green oasis between the main train station and the city center. With old trees, wide meadows, and a pavilion, it forms the ideal stage for an open-air festival. The acoustics are good, the shade under the trees is welcome, and its proximity to the city center makes the park particularly accessible for younger audiences.
The 2026 edition of Knutstock focuses on two intensive festival days. The main stage runs Friday and Saturday with six to eight bands per day. Alongside, workshops, info booths, and a children's program. Catering by local partners with moderate prices.
Free admission to the entire festival. Workshops and table tennis tournament are free. Food and drinks at moderate prices (pizza from approx. 6 EUR, draft beer approx. 3.50 EUR). Donations for the association work of Kule Knut e.V. are welcome.
By tram: Lines 1, 3, or 5 of VAG to Eschholzstraße, then approx. 3 minutes walk to the park. By bike or on foot: Eschholzpark is centrally located between Stühlinger and the city center. Driving is not recommended — limited parking.
