Monastic market with communities from Germany and Europe at Walkenried Abbey
The Klostermarkt Walkenried is one of the most important events in the annual program of the Cistercian Abbey Walkenried. The venue is the abbey forecourt at Steinweg 4a, supplemented by the adjacent monastery grounds. The market brings together religious orders and abbeys from Germany and European countries, who present their products at their own sales stands.
The product range extends from culinary monastery products – monastery beer, liqueurs, spirits, honey, cheese, cured meats, jams, and baked goods – to artisanal products such as ceramics, jewelry, carved wooden items, felt crafts, and leather goods, as well as care products like soaps, creams, and herbal items. Many products can only be purchased directly from the monastic communities and are therefore particularly sought after at markets.
Regular exhibitors include abbeys from the Benedictine, Cistercian, Franciscan, Dominican, and other religious orders. The market thus offers a diverse insight into contemporary monastic life in Germany and Europe.
The event can be combined with a visit to the Cistercian Museum: The combined ticket grants access to both the Klostermarkt and the museum, which documents the history of the Cistercian Abbey Walkenried and Cistercian architecture in general. Thus, the Klostermarkt combines a sales exhibition with cultural-historical education.
The 2026 edition will once again bring together monastic communities from home and abroad. The exact list of exhibitors will be announced by the Cistercian Museum in advance and typically includes around 30 to 40 stands from various religious orders.
