Intimate Advent market in the courtyard of Bleckede Castle on the second weekend of Advent
Bleckede Elbe Castle is a 15th-century Renaissance castle that today houses the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue—an experience and information center for the Lower Saxony Elbe River Biosphere Reserve. The enclosed castle courtyard, with its thick brick walls, provides an exceptionally atmospheric setting for the small Advent market. Wooden stalls line the courtyard, torches and lights provide warm illumination, and Advent music emanates from the castle in the background. The market's compact size—usually around 15 to 20 stalls—creates an intimate atmosphere, contrasting with the crowds of large Christmas markets.
The stallholders are carefully selected by the Biosphaerium. They include regional artisans, potters, beekeepers, jam and liqueur producers, Advent decorators, knitters, jewelers, and vendors of Advent specialties. Mass-produced goods are deliberately avoided. The gastronomic offerings are dominated by regional mulled wine, hot chocolate, bratwurst, soups, and sweet Advent specialties.
Beyond the market activities, the Schlossweihnacht offers a supporting Advent program—Advent music, demonstrations, storytelling for children, and brass concerts. The Biosphaerium also opens parts of its exhibition, allowing families to combine a visit to the market with a tour of the natural history exhibit. In the late afternoon and early evening, as dusk falls, the full Advent spirit unfolds with light, music, and scents.
Bleckede is a small town of around 9,000 inhabitants on the Elbe River and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the southeastern Lüneburg district. The Elbe Castle, with the Biosphaerium, is the town's landmark and cultural anchor. In addition to the Schlossweihnacht, the courtyard hosts open-air concerts by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in the summer.
As in previous years, the castle courtyard will be bathed in atmospheric light—torches, fairy lights, and illuminated stalls will create a warm Advent ambiance. The intimate size of the market is its hallmark: unlike the large Christmas markets in Lüneburg, the Schlossweihnacht invites visitors for a leisurely stroll, conversation with stallholders, and relaxation. Families will find a dedicated children's program, while adults can enjoy mulled wine and Advent specialties in the Renaissance setting.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue in late autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
