Summer theatre in the Island Church Koserow
Koserow is located at the narrowest point of Usedom between Streckelsberg and the Achterwasser lagoon, in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The Baltic Sea resort is part of the "Usedom Amber Resorts" and combines beach tourism with a surprisingly dense cultural calendar. For years, Klassik am Meer has been the most important theatrical highlight of the summer – a multi-week production series in the Evangelical Church of Koserow.
The Evangelical Church of Koserow is a typical brick Gothic house of worship with a characteristic thatched roof on the tower, which often plays a direct role in the stage design. In summer, the church interior becomes a theatre stage for a few weeks: rows of seats are oriented towards a flexible performance area in the chancel, lighting and sound are temporarily installed, and the acoustic qualities of the space shape the performance.
Unlike a classic festival with guest performances, the productions of Klassik am Meer are created as independent stage productions that are on the programme for weeks. Thursdays and Fridays are fixed performance evenings, usually starting at 5:30 PM. In addition, there are individual concert and reading evenings.
The 2026 season is dedicated to Ödön von Horváth (1901–1938), one of the most important Austro-Hungarian playwrights of the 20th century. Three main productions mark the summer: "Kasimir und Karoline" with its premiere on June 25th, "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung" adapted by Lukas Kristl with its premiere on July 2nd, and the concert "Brel – the Servant Rebel" on July 20th with Grégoire Gros.
Tickets are sold through Reservix. Travel by UBB (Usedomer Bäderbahn) to Koserow station, then a few minutes' walk. Those coming from the hinterland can reach Koserow via the B111.
The 2026 season of Klassik am Meer is entirely dedicated to Ödön von Horváth (125th birthday). The premiere of "Kasimir und Karoline" is on June 25th in the Evangelical Church of Koserow, followed by "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung" in Lukas Kristl's adaptation on July 2nd – both productions run as a multi-week summer theatre series and are performed on Thursdays and Fridays at 5:30 PM, with the last performance on September 11, 2026. As a special event, the concert "Brel – the Servant Rebel" will be held on July 20th with singer Grégoire Gros, who musically explores the life and songs of Jacques Brel. A guest performance of the production is planned for October 2026 in Bad Lauchstädt.
