Traditional open-air Kirmes on the Rathausplatz of the Westerwald town of Westerburg in August 2026
The Kirmes Westerburg transforms the town's central Rathausplatz into a lively festival ground every midsummer. For several days, the festival offers a traditional program with a Kirmesbaum (fairground tree), Frühschoppen (morning pint), concerts, and a festive market day.
In 2026, the Westerburg Kirmes runs from August 2nd to 4th, concluding on Tuesday, August 5th, with the traditional Kirmesmarkt (fairground market). The family-friendly atmosphere and free admission make the festival one of the most popular summer meeting points in the western Westerwald region.
The Kirmes Westerburg is part of centuries-old Westerwald customs. Like in many Westerwald communities, the Kirmes originally evolved from the Kirchweihfest (church consecration festival) and has developed over generations into an identity-shaping Volksfest (folk festival). Westerburg, the seat of the municipality of the same name, cultivates this tradition with particular dedication.
Unlike many Kirmes events held on an out-of-town fairground, the Westerburg event takes place right in the town center. The Rathausplatz, with views of the striking town hall and the surrounding old town, forms the natural stage. This central location creates a particularly lively atmosphere and makes the Kirmes easily accessible.
The four-day festival program follows a proven structure: Saturday evening focuses on the ceremonial raising of the Kirmesbaum and the official opening, followed by a live concert. Sunday is designed as a family day with a festive church service, Frühschoppen, and an afternoon program. Monday features the traditional Kirmeszug (fairground procession) with a brass band through the town. Tuesday concludes the festival with the classic Kirmesmarkt.
Free admission, a diverse program, and the central location make the Kirmes Westerburg an event that appeals to all generations. Clubs, caterers, and volunteers ensure a well-maintained ambiance. Westerburg itself, nestled in the Westerwald hills between forests and lakes, offers a charming setting for a Kirmes visit with a subsequent stroll through the town.
The Kirmes Westerburg 2026 takes place from Saturday, August 2nd to Monday, August 4th, on the Rathausplatz. The opening on Saturday evening includes the traditional raising of the Kirmesbaum and the official opening ceremony at 7:30 PM, followed by a concert by the band First Beat starting at 9 PM. Sunday is Family Day with a festive church service and Frühschoppen, and Monday features the traditional festival procession. On Tuesday, August 5th, the classic Kirmesmarkt with around 30 stalls will follow.
The 2026 program has been officially confirmed by the organizers. The open-air Kirmes with free admission follows the established Westerburg tradition with Kirmesbaum, opening ceremony, concert, Frühschoppen, festival procession, and concluding market. The combination of tradition and live music makes the festival a key event in the Westerburg event calendar.
