The Kirmes Neunkirchen is the most traditional folk festival (Volksfest) in the Westerwald municipality of Neunkirchen in the Altenkirchen district. For four days, from Friday to Monday, the community's festival grounds are dedicated to conviviality, brass band music, dancing, and culinary diversity. The large festival tent forms the heart of the event and can accommodate several hundred guests.
The Kirmes is supported by the Vereinsring Neunkirchen, an association of all local clubs. This pooling of volunteer efforts guarantees a varied program and secures the continuation of a tradition deeply rooted in the Westerwald region. Marksmen's clubs, music associations, athletes, and the volunteer fire department all contribute equally, shaping the family-friendly atmosphere.
Four Days of Westerwald Festival Spirit
Kirmes Friday traditionally marks the opening with the ceremonial tapping of the first keg (Fassanstich) and a dance party that kicks off the festival with verve. Saturday is dedicated to great party nights with live bands or DJs, while Sunday takes a calmer tone with a morning pint gathering (Frühschoppen), a festive church service at midday, and a family afternoon. Kirmes Monday concludes the event with the traditional flea market (Krammarkt) and a final communal dance evening.
Festival Tent and Grounds
The heated festival tent with a stage, dance floor, and bar is set up on-site and offers a cozy ambiance in any weather. Around the tent, a small amusement park emerges with a children's carousel, candy stalls, shooting galleries, and food stands. The regional bratwurst, freshly tapped beer, and traditional Westerwald apple wine are staples of the culinary offerings.
Significance for the Region
For many families, the Kirmes Neunkirchen is the prime occasion to see relatives and acquaintances from all over the Westerwald. The Kirmes thus has an impact far beyond the municipal borders and remains an important part of village life in the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld administrative district.
