Kerwa Tradition in the Franconian Lake District
The municipality of Unterschwaningen in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district has several Kirchweih festivals throughout the year: Dennenlohe in April, Kröttenbach in May, Oberschwaningen in June, and Unterschwaningen itself in September. The Kröttenbacher Kirchweih is a true Franconian village Kerwa, celebrated in the region around the Hesselberg for generations.
As everywhere in Middle Franconia, the focus of the Kerwa is on convivial hours in the inn or festival tent: grilled bratwurst, Krenfleisch (boiled beef with horseradish), freshly tapped beer, and the occasional Kerwa dance. The festival is supported by local clubs, especially TSV Unterschwaningen and the volunteer fire brigade.
Margrave Village with Baroque Heritage
Unterschwaningen is known as a former Margrave village – the baroque heritage of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach still shapes the town today. The Kerwa fits into this cultural environment as a down-to-earth, rural counterpart to the baroque splendor. Those who want to experience rural Franconia away from the big folk festivals will find themselves here.
