The Kerwe Otterbach is the traditional Kirchweih (church fair) of the Palatinate village of Otterbach in the Otterbach-Otterberg administrative district in the Kaiserslautern district. From September 26th to 29th, 2026, the four-day Kerwe will be celebrated on the 4th weekend in September.
Otterbach in the Lauter Valley
Otterbach is located northwest of Kaiserslautern in the Lauter Valley, at the transition to the Palatinate Forest. The municipality belongs to the Otterbach-Otterberg administrative district, which consists of the two namesake halves. With the Kerwe, Otterbach preserves an important piece of its own village identity.
Four-Day Palatinate Kerwe
The Otterbach Kerwe is celebrated over four days from Saturday to Tuesday: Opening with barrel tapping on Saturday evening, main Kerwe day on Sunday with morning pint, lunch, Kerwe parade at 1 PM and evening celebration, Monday Family Day with Kerwe burial late in the evening, Tuesday winding down.
Kerwe Parade on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße
The highlight of the Kerwe is the Kerwe parade on Sunday at 1 PM through Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, the central main street of Otterbach. Decorated floats, music bands, the Kerweborsch (Kerwe boys), and local clubs parade through the village; spectators line the street. This is followed by the Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) at the festival tent and festivities until late in the evening.
Kerweborsch and Customs
As in every Palatinate village, the Kerweborsch (Kerwe boys), Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor), and Kerwestrauß (Kerwe bouquet) characterize the festival. The humorous and satirical Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) on Sunday afternoon is the highlight of the Kerwe.
Club Life and Catering
The local clubs – sports club, fire department, and others – provide the festival tent, bar, and catering. The menu features Palatinate classics: Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), and fries. Draft beer and Palatinate wine accompany the festival weekend.
