Traditional Mundenheim Gockelskerwe at Zedtwitzhof – Kerwe rooster instead of rooster burning
Mundenheim is one of Ludwigshafen's southern districts and celebrates its most important annual event with the Gockelskerwe. The Kerwe has a long tradition and is closely linked to the sense of community among the people of Mundenheim.
The name “Gockelskerwe” derives from the traditional custom of burning a rooster at the end of the Kerwe, a concluding ritual common at many Palatinate Kerwen. Until 2018, a real rooster was burned in Mundenheim – a custom that had increasingly come under criticism. Since 2019, a symbolic Kerwe rooster made of wood and other materials has been crafted and burned instead. In this way, the Mundenheim Kerwe has preserved the custom in a contemporary form.
The Zedtwitzhof – a central square in Mundenheim – provides the spatial basis for the festival grounds. Rides, a festival tent, food stalls, and a stage are set up here. The compact size creates a dense Kerwe atmosphere.
In 2026, the Kerwe runs from Thursday, August 14th, to Sunday, August 17th. Opening on Thursday evening, packed program highlights on the weekend, traditional Kerwe conclusion on Sunday with the symbolic burning of the Kerwe rooster.
The Mundenheim Kerwe coincides with the Kerwe in Oppau in mid-August. Both are part of the series of district Kerwen that continue the Kerwe season after the Pfingstweidefest and the Pfalzfest.
The Zedtwitzhof transforms into the district's festival grounds for four days. Associations serve food, showmen set up rides, and a stage provides musical accompaniment.
The complete 2026 program will be published in good time by the district association and Lukom. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
