The Kerwe Freckenfeld is part of the widespread Palatinate Kerwe tradition (from Middle High German 'kirchweihe'), which in numerous villages of the Palatinate uses the patron saint's day of the respective parish church as an occasion for a multi-day club festival. In Freckenfeld, the Kerwe is traditionally celebrated at the beginning of June.
Concept and Organizers
The organizers are the municipality of Freckenfeld, the local clubs (sports club, music club, fire department), and the Kerweborsch (Kerwe lads), who take on the role of the informal festival committee. The focus is on a large festival tent on the Kerweplatz, supplemented by small food stalls and possibly amusement rides for children.
Program
Kerwe Friday opens with the tapping of the first beer keg and the start of the festival tent operations. Saturday is dominated by the big dance evening with live music or a DJ set, and Sunday features the traditional 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) with brass music, followed by the Kerwerede by the Kerweborsch, in which the past year's village events are humorously reflected upon and commented on.
Catering
Classic Palatinate: Bratwurst, steak, Saumagen, Leberknödel, fries, potato salad, along with Kerwe beer on tap, Palatinate wine, Schorle (wine spritzer), and non-alcoholic drinks. The clubs take turns catering throughout the day.
