Grand Rosenmontagszug on 16.02.2026 through the city center of Mayen with 11 floats, 32 walking groups, and 5 music bands
The Mayen Carnival is part of the vibrant Fastnacht (Carnival) tradition of northern Rhineland-Palatinate, in the transition zone between Rhenish Carnival and Mainz Fastnacht. The highlight of the Mayen season is the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade), which takes place every year through the city center of the Eifel town, attracting thousands of visitors from the region and beyond.
The Alte Große Mayener Karnevalsgesellschaft organizes the event with a long tradition. The 2026 edition includes 11 floats, 32 walking groups, and 5 music bands. This scale makes the parade one of the largest in the region between Koblenz, Andernach, and the Eifel.
Already on Carnival Saturday (February 14, 2026), the children's parade takes place on the market square at 2:11 PM – a smaller parade specifically for children, families, and schools. Here too, there are guards, music groups, and clubs, in a more child-friendly, shorter format.
The Rosenmontagszug on February 16, 2026, traditionally begins at 1:11 PM. The route leads from Koblenzer Straße via Bachstraße, Wittbende, Habsburgring, Marktstraße, Neustraße, and Boemundring to the market square. Several kilometers through the historic city center with its medieval core and Genovevaburg castle as a landmark.
The parade is accompanied by Mayen Fastnacht sayings like “Helau” (Rhenish battle cry), abundant Kamelle (sweets) throwing, and musical contributions from the bands. Political and social themes are often addressed on the floats; individual clubs and carnival societies showcase their guards, Funkenmariechen (sparkling maids), and dance groups.
After the parade, the festive community retreats to the numerous pubs, festival halls, and club rooms, where Carnival continues to be celebrated until the late evening hours. The Mayen Rosenmontagszug represents a traditional, lively Fastnacht culture that equally cherishes the heritage of the Eifel and Rhine regions.
The 2026 edition offers two parades: the child-friendly children's parade on Carnival Saturday and the grand Rosenmontagszug. The participation with 11 floats, 32 walking groups, and 5 music bands makes the Rosenmontagszug one of the largest in the region between Koblenz and the Eifel.
The route leads from Koblenzer Straße via Bachstraße, Wittbende, Habsburgring, Marktstraße, Neustraße, and Boemundring to the market square. Numerous streets in the city center are closed – details on traffic regulations will be published by the city of Mayen in due time.
