Running on Europe's longest beach promenade from Poland to Germany
The International Usedom Marathon is one of Germany's most unusual running events: the marathon route starts in Polish Świnoujście and leads along Europe's longest beach promenade through the three imperial seaside resorts of Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, and Bansin to the Peene Stadium in Wolgast. The run thus connects two countries and showcases the best that the island of Usedom in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has to offer.
The program includes three official distances, all measured according to World Athletics standards:
The course is considered a scenic highlight: the lively boulevard of the imperial resorts with its spa architecture villas alternates with quiet coastal forests and gentle hilly sections. Surface: cobblestones on the promenade, asphalt on connecting roads, forest floor in the natural sections. Time limits: 5:20 h for the marathon (passing Kölpinsee at km 21.8 in 2:30 h, Zinnowitz at km 30 in 3:30 h), 2:40 h for the half marathon.
The first edition of the Usedom Marathon took place in 1981 – making the race one of the oldest marathon runs in northern Germany. The 46th edition will be celebrated in 2026. The half marathon will be on its 35th edition, and the relay marathon on its 10th. The record lists document the history of the run in detail.
The slogan "No big city bustle. Just you and the Baltic Sea" describes the character of the run: no mass start in a metropolis, but a sporting experience against a natural backdrop. Families, hobby runners, and ambitious marathoners meet here in a relaxed, warm atmosphere – supported by the club Usedom-Marathon e.V. and many volunteers from the Vorpommern-Greifswald district.
On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the cross-border marathon will enter its 46th edition. Three competitions are available:
