Opening of the Architecture Forum in the world-famous Hundertwasser Station Uelzen with permanent and special exhibitions
The Hundertwasser Station Uelzen is one of the most famous late works of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000). Redesigned for Expo 2000 in Hanover, the station has become an international attraction: colourful columns, golden domes, organic shapes, planting on the roof — an artistic vision that uncompromisingly opposes the grey functional buildings of post-war modernism.
In spring 2026, an Architecture Forum will open in the station, placing Hundertwasser's work in a global context. The permanent exhibition presents over 40 Hundertwasser buildings worldwide — from Vienna (Hundertwasserhaus, KunstHausWien) via Bad Soden (Spirale) and Magdeburg (Grüne Zitadelle) to buildings in Japan, New Zealand, and the USA. Models, photographs, sketches, and multimedia presentations offer deep insights into the artist's architectural language.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, changing special exhibitions are planned, focusing on specific themes — such as Hundertwasser's ecological building, his manifestos, his watercolours and graphic prints, or contemporary architects in his tradition. This ensures the forum is not a static display but a vibrant place that evolves and offers new perspectives time and again.
The programme complements the exhibitions with regular guided tours of the station and the forum, presentations by architects, art historians, and Hundertwasser experts, as well as readings from Hundertwasser's manifestos and biographical texts. School classes can book special tours that present the work in an educational manner.
The forum is deliberately designed as an experiential space for rail travellers, tourists, and art enthusiasts. Those who change trains or stop over in Uelzen can experience the station as an exhibition. Those who travel specifically to Uelzen to see Hundertwasser will find the ideal in-depth experience in the forum. And those who are holidaying in the region anyway — for example, in the Lüneburg Heath — have another reason to stop in the Hanseatic city of Uelzen.
With the Architecture Forum, Uelzen gains a cultural institution that extends beyond regional significance. The Hundertwasser Station has so far been primarily a photo motif — with the forum, it becomes a place of mediation and learning. A clever enhancement that unlocks the full depth of Hundertwasser's late work.
