A Westerwald Festival Tradition

The Hubertuskirmes dates back to the centuries-old tradition of venerating Saint Hubertus, which holds particular significance in the Westerwald — a densely wooded region shaped by hunting. Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters and foresters, is an important figure of identification in the predominantly Catholic Westerwald. His veneration led to the development of a unique Kirmes format in many Westerwald communities.

Rennerod as a Festival Location

Rennerod is the seat of the eponymous administrative district in the Oberwesterwald, close to the border with Hesse. The small town, with its Westerwaldhalle serving as the central meeting place, offers the ideal infrastructure for a major Kirmes: a festival hall, ample parking, an easily accessible location, and a vibrant club scene.

The Vereinsring as Organizer

The Hubertuskirmes is organized by the Vereinsring Rennerod — an association of all local clubs. This collective organization ensures that the Kirmes truly involves the entire community. The fire department, sports clubs, music associations, marksmen, hunters, and cultural heritage groups each contribute to the program.

Program Structure

The four-day program follows the classic Westerwald Kirmes dramaturgy: opening on Friday with a concert or DJ, main concert or live band on Saturday evening, a festive church service and Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday, a traditional Kirmeszug (fair parade) and closing on Monday. Thousands of Visitors

With thousands of visitors from the northern Westerwald district and neighboring Hessian communities, the Hubertuskirmes is a major crowd-puller. Families, young people, regulars, and first-time visitors mingle to form a colorful festival community — the Hubertuskirmes is a festival for all generations, a meeting point, and a social event all at once.
