Atmospheric summer festival on the historic Haller city wall with torchlight and colourful lights
The Hoolgaaschtfest is one of Schwäbisch Hall's most atmospheric summer festivals. It is celebrated in honour of the Hoolgaascht, a legendary figure of the former imperial city: In Haller dialect, the Haal spirit is called 'Hoolgaascht' — a benevolent spirit and patron saint of the city, said to protect against plague, fire, and flood. Above all, the Haal spirit is considered the 'guardian of the salt spring' — and thus a symbolic protector of the salt spring in the Haal district, which brought Schwäbisch Hall wealth and importance in the Middle Ages.
The venue is not a central square, but the historic Haller city wall itself — specifically the section of the wall at the Langenfelder Tor, one of Southern Germany's most impressive surviving city gates, and the Pechnasenturm. Celebrations take place in a cosy setting on the ramparts and in the tower. Torchlight, colourful lanterns, and the feeling of sitting in the midst of city history contribute to the special charm of this festival.
The Hoolgaaschtfest is not a loud, large-scale event, but a convivial summer night festival with live music, catering, cool drinks, and an atmosphere that belongs to the people of Schwäbisch Hall. Anyone who has attended knows why the event is listed under 'Festivals & Highlights' in the city's event calendar — a summer evening between imperial city romance and Swabian cosiness.
Schwäbisch Hall (district town of the Schwäbisch Hall district, AGS 08127, around 41,000 inhabitants) is located on the Kocher river in northern Baden-Württemberg. With its completely preserved old town, the town church of St. Michael, and the famous open-air theatre steps, the former free imperial city is one of the most beautiful towns in Southern Germany. Salt, art (Kunsthalle Würth), and tradition shape Schwäbisch Hall — and with the Hoolgaaschtfest, the city wall gets the spotlight it deserves once every summer.
On Saturday, August 8, 2026, the city of Schwäbisch Hall invites you to the Hoolgaaschtfest on the historic city wall. The section of the wall at Langenfelder Tor and the Pechnasenturm transform into a cosy festival area for one evening — torchlight, colourful lights, catering, and live music bring the imperial city romance into a summer setting.
The celebration honours the 'Hoolgaascht' — the Haal spirit in Haller dialect — as the city's benevolent patron. A small but fine tradition, firmly anchored in Schwäbisch Hall's event calendar and primarily attended by locals.
