Tonnenhof as an Open-Air Gallery

The Tonnenhof in Emden is one of the city's industrial heritage sites. The trough track here – a service track built in concrete with high wall surfaces – offers an ideal canvas of up to 2,300 square meters for large-format street art works. Hit the Trog utilizes this architecture to give wall surfaces to an entire generation of German graffiti and street artists for creation.

Artists and Style

Both established street art stars from German-speaking countries and young talents are invited. The stylistic range includes classic graffiti pieces, figurative murals, abstract compositions, stencil works, and large-format murals. The festival sees itself as a platform for the diversity of contemporary urban art.

Format and Atmosphere

Over three festival days, artists work on their pieces on-site. Visitors can witness the creation of the murals live, talk to the artists, and gain insights into their techniques. Accompanying DJ sets, food stalls, and occasional workshops for interested parties are offered. The festival is free to enter and easily accessible.

Permanent Nature of the Works

Unlike many street art events, the works at Hit the Trog remain permanently visible. This creates a continuously growing open-air gallery over the years, shaping Emden's cityscape and attracting street art tourists from home and abroad. The festival is part of the Emden Summer of Culture 2026 and is organized by the City of Emden with the Cultural Office.

Hit the Trog — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Hit the Trog takes place from Friday, August 14, 2026, to Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Tonnenhof Emden. Numerous German graffiti and street artists will work on the trough track, adorning the concrete walls over an area of up to 2,300 square meters. Visitors can witness the creation process of the works live. The festival is part of the Emden Summer of Culture 2026, admission is free, and the works will remain permanently visible.

The 2026 edition continues the proven format: three festival days with live painting on the trough track, an accompanying supporting program with DJ sets and food stalls, and low-threshold access for an interested audience. The participating artists will be announced in advance by the organizer.

The street art works from previous years remain visible, lending the Tonnenhof its special character as a growing open-air gallery. The 2026 festival will expand the collection with additional works.
