Overview

Before being renamed Herbstival, the format was called Panopticum Sommerfest and in 2025 it still took place in mid-summer at Berger Festplatz in Stuttgart's East End. Even in its predecessor version, the focus was on the combination of electronic music and installation art. Organized by Stuttgart subculture players as an alternative response to the city's established summer festivals.

Panopticum as Predecessor

Until 2025, the format at Berger Festplatz was called Panopticum Sommerfest and took place in mid-summer. With the decision to move the festival to September starting in 2026, the history of Panopticum under its old name concluded. However, the conceptual focus — music and visual art, curated by Stuttgart collectives — remains.

Stuttgart's East End is a central location for subculture events: the Lehenviertel scene, the Wagenhallen, the small clubs on Talstraße — all these players feed into the program. In 2025, Panopticum demonstrated that open-air programs can also work outside the established festival formats (Kessel Festival, Jazzopen).
