Traditional Advent market on the historic market square with crafts, culinary delights, a fire column, and the Peace Light
When the fairy lights are lit between the half-timbered houses and the scent of mulled wine, candied almonds, and fresh bratwurst wafts across the market square, the most wonderful time of the year begins in Helmstedt. For almost four weeks, the Christmas market invites you to stroll, enjoy, and linger.
The stallholders come primarily from the Helmstedt region and its surroundings. They offer handmade Christmas decorations, woodwork, ceramics, jewelry, candles, beekeeping products, liqueurs, and specialties of North German cuisine. Those looking for gifts beyond mass-produced items will find them here.
The central fire column in the market square serves as both a meeting point and a source of warmth. It becomes particularly atmospheric when the Peace Light from Bethlehem is brought to Helmstedt and passed on to the citizens—a tradition that the former border town cherishes with special significance.
On weekends and selected evenings, regional choirs, brass bands, wind ensembles, and solo artists perform on the market stage. Advent songs, classics, and modern interpretations create the right atmosphere.
Helmstedt's market square is one of the most beautiful in Lower Saxony. The town hall with its striking tower, St. Stephen's Church, the patrician townhouses, and the Juleum, the former university auditorium, form a unique backdrop for the Christmas market.
Visitor numbers noticeably increase on weekends. Families with children can enjoy a carousel, face painting, and occasional visits from St. Nicholas or Santa Claus.
The exact opening hours and program schedule will be published by the organizer in November 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
