50 Years of the Greater Municipality of Kaufungen

In 1976, the villages of Niederkaufungen and Oberkaufungen were merged into the Großgemeinde Kaufungen (greater municipality). Two places became one municipality in the Kassel district — and exactly 50 years later, this is being celebrated with the biggest Heimatfest in a long time. From June 20th to 28th, 2026, the celebration spans an entire week.

Kick-off: Dorftage Niederkaufungen

The traditional Dorftage in Niederkaufungen kick things off on the weekend of June 20th/21st — a standalone event with contributions from local clubs, street music, and catering. They serve as the prelude to the main marquee weekend, atmospherically introducing the residents to the Heimatfest.

The Marquee Weekend on the Festival Grounds

From Thursday, June 25th, to Sunday, June 28th, the marquee program runs on the Kaufungen festival grounds. Three highlights are confirmed:

• Thursday, June 25th — «Two Decades, One Party» with the live band «The 80s 90s Liveband»
• Friday, June 26th — Tribute Double Bill: «Alex im Westerland» (Die Toten Hosen) and a Die Ärzte cover band
• Saturday, June 27th — «Dirndlrock & Lederhosen» with the Würzbuam

In addition, there will be funfair rides, a children's program, catering by local clubs, and a family day.

Kaufungen in the Söhrewald Forest

Kaufungen is located about ten kilometers east of Kassel, on the edge of the Söhrewald forest. With around 12,000 inhabitants, it is one of the larger municipalities in the district. Its historically documented history dates back over a thousand years — Kaufungen is primarily known for its collegiate church and convent history (Stift Kaufungen, Empress Kunigunde).
