35th Heide-Drachenfest in Hanstedt-Ollsen with historical kites over the Lüneburg Heath
The Heide-Drachenfest Ollsen has been held since 1991 and celebrates its 35th edition in 2026. For over three decades, the festival has developed into one of the most beautiful kite festival events in Northern Germany, attracting kite enthusiasts, families, and Heath tourists to Hanstedt-Ollsen every year. The unique location at the entrance to the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park provides the perfect backdrop.
Saturday and Sunday form the framework for the festival. During the day, kites fly in the sky above the wide Heath meadows, and on Saturday evening, live music in the festival tent creates a cozy atmosphere.
A special feature of the Heide-Drachenfest is the historical kites, some of which have been reconstructed based on old designs. Box kite kites, Cody kites, Eddy kites from around 1900, and other historical constructions are flown by experienced kite flyers, conveying the fascination of kite flying history.
In addition to historical kites, participating kite flyers showcase modern stunt kites with precise maneuvers, impressive giant kites with wingspans of several meters, and colorful children's kites that even the youngest visitors can fly themselves. Kite building workshops offer children the opportunity to craft and fly their own kites.
The Heide-Drachenfest is a classic family event. Food stalls with bratwurst, fries, coffee, and cake, activities for children, and a live music program on Saturday evening make the festival a convivial weekend. The country inn Zur Eiche serves as the culinary base.
The 35th edition in 2026 continues the long-standing tradition. Kite flyers from all over Northern Germany and sometimes from neighboring countries come to Ollsen to fly their artistic creations over the unique Heath landscape.
The location at the entrance to the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park offers a special natural setting not only for the kites but also for the visitors.
