Handel and the House of Hanover-Welfen

George Frideric Handel was closely associated with the House of Hanover-Welfen for decades. Before moving to London, where he rose to become the celebrated opera composer of the English royal court, he was court composer to the Elector of Hanover, George Louis – later King George I of Great Britain. The Welfenschloss in Hann. Münden

The Welfenschloss in Hann. Münden is one of Lower Saxony's significant Renaissance castles. Built in the 16th century by the Welfen Dukes, it was the seat of the ducal residence and continues to shape the cityscape of the 'Three Rivers City' at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers forming the Weser. The expansion of the Göttingen Handel Festival's venues to Hann. Münden is part of a strategy to open up the festival spatially and programmatically. Instead of concentrating solely on Göttingen, the festival consciously seeks locations in the wider region that offer historical connections to Handel's work and his era. The Welfenschloss in Hann.
