Offshoot of the Göttingen Handel Festival in the Welfenschloss Hann. Münden – The Rolling Georg
George Frideric Handel was closely associated with the House of Hanover-Welfen for decades. Before moving to London, where he rose to become the celebrated opera composer of the English royal court, he was court composer to the Elector of Hanover, George Louis – later King George I of Great Britain. These personal and institutional connections shaped Handel's career and created the historical constellation that the program 'Der rollende Georg' in the Welfenschloss Hann. Münden addresses.
The Welfenschloss in Hann. Münden is one of Lower Saxony's significant Renaissance castles. Built in the 16th century by the Welfen Dukes, it was the seat of the ducal residence and continues to shape the cityscape of the 'Three Rivers City' at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers forming the Weser. The castle's rooms offer exceptional acoustics and an atmospheric setting for Baroque music – an ideal location for a Handel Festival concert.
Hann. Münden, located in southern Lower Saxony at the transition to Hesse, is one of the region's most historically significant towns. The confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers to form the Weser has given the place its geographical and historical character. The old town, with its over 700 half-timbered houses from several centuries, is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered old towns in Germany. The Welfenschloss is one of the city's central architectural monuments.
The expansion of the Göttingen Handel Festival's venues to Hann. Münden is part of a strategy to open up the festival spatially and programmatically. Instead of concentrating solely on Göttingen, the festival consciously seeks locations in the wider region that offer historical connections to Handel's work and his era. The Welfenschloss in Hann. Münden, with its connection to the House of Welfen, is such an ideal location.
The concert is conceived as a musical-historical reflection of the Welfen-Hanover-Handel connection. The rooms of the Welfenschloss offer more than just a beautiful backdrop – their acoustics, their history, and their connection to the Welfen family make them a thematically fitting location for such a program.
The expansion of the festival to the Welfenschloss in Hann. Münden is part of the festival's strategy to extend the program spatially and utilize new venues with historical substance. This creates an additional musical highlight in the festival program for the southern Lower Saxony region.
