28th edition of the internationally renowned chamber music festival by the Mandelring Quartet at Hambach Castle
The Hambach Music Festival is one of Germany's most renowned chamber music festivals, celebrating its 28th edition in 2026. It was founded in the late 1990s by the internationally acclaimed Mandelring Quartet — a string quartet ensemble consisting of three brothers and a quartet partner, with roots in the Palatinate region.
From Wednesday, June 3rd to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, five intensive festival days will transform Hambach Castle and selected Palatinate wineries into concert halls. The combination of chamber music at the highest level with the unique atmosphere of a historic castle and Palatinate wine culture is the festival's distinctive hallmark.
The opening on Wednesday, June 3rd at 8 PM features works by German Romantic composers: Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Thursday will host two concerts at 3 PM and 7:30 PM, while Friday's concert will take place in the St. Jakobus Church Neustadt at 7 PM — the neo-Gothic parish church offers a particularly sacred acoustic atmosphere for selected works. Saturday will again feature two concerts at 3 PM and 7:30 PM.
On Sunday, June 7th, the festival culminates with two highlights: the morning concert at 11 AM and the traditional Surprise Concert at 6 PM — a program whose content is only revealed during the performance, making it a small sensation each year.
Performers in 2026 include Israeli harpist Sivan Magen and acclaimed pianist Oliver Triendl, alongside members of the Mandelring Quartet and other international guest soloists. The festival upholds a special tradition of combining classic standard repertoire with rarely performed works and world premieres, as well as fostering groundbreaking encounters between established artists and emerging talents.
The 28th edition of the Hambach Music Festival comprises seven concerts over five festival days from June 3rd to 7th, 2026. The complete 2026 program has already been published in its key points and will be detailed on hambachermusikfest.de and concerti.de.
The festival's structure follows a long-established choreography: a festive opening on Wednesday, intensive concert days from Thursday to Saturday with one to two concerts each day, and a crowning Sunday with a morning concert and the traditional Surprise Concert in the evening.
