71st edition of the Haardter Spring Wine Festival with wheelbarrow race on Ascension Day
The Haardter Weinfest auf der Straße is one of the most famous spring wine festivals in the Pfalz and in 2026 celebrates its 71st edition. It takes place in the exclusive hillside wine village of Haardt — a district of Neustadt that nestles against the first hills of the Palatinate Forest and has become one of Germany's most renowned wine villages in recent decades.
The festival runs from Friday, May 8th to Thursday, May 14th, 2026 — a full week that cleverly combines the May holiday weekend with Ascension Day (Father's Day). The wine festival opens on Friday, May 8th at 6:30 PM in the schoolyard of the Michael-Ende-Schule (Mandelring 19), where the central festival grounds are set up.
The festival mile stretches along the Mandelring — the eponymous main street, which is transformed into a pink almond blossom tunnel in March. Several Haardt wineries open their courtyards and serve wine directly — including renowned producers such as Müller-Catoir, Weegmüller, Oliver Zeter, and Probsthof. The Haardt wine style is famous for its mineral-precise Rieslings, full-bodied Burgundies, and elegant sparkling wines.
The absolute highlight of the festival week is the traditional wheelbarrow race on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 14th, 2026, at 3 PM. Couples — usually one person pushes the wheelbarrow while the other sits in it — race down the Mandelring, which is closed off for the event. The race has been a must-see for locals and visitors for decades and is an occasion for exuberant folk revelry with a glass of wine in hand.
Accompanying this, the Haardt associations offer hearty Palatinate specialties: Saumagen (pork stomach stuffed with meat and spices), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Quetschekuche (plum cake), Flammkuchen (flatbread pizza). The location in Haardt, situated above the Rhine plain — with sweeping views over the vineyards — gives the festival its special cheerful atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of the Haardter Weinfest spans a full festival week from May 8th to 14th and cleverly integrates Ascension Day on the last day of the festival. The venue is the central festival grounds in the schoolyard of the Michael-Ende-Schule and the festival mile along the Mandelring.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: opening on Friday evening, continuous festival operation on the following days with a focus on the weekend, smaller live acts and club evenings during the week, and a grand finale with the wheelbarrow race on Father's Day.
