Five Days of Joy, Music, and Community – Festival Week of the Civic Marksmen's Society of 1392
The Bürger-Schützen-Gesellschaft Göttingen is one of the oldest marksmen's societies in Germany. With its first documented mention in 1392, its history dates back to the late Middle Ages and is closely linked to the city's history in Göttingen. For over six centuries, the society has organized the Civic and Marksmen's Festival in various formats – always as a festival for the entire citizenry, not just a club event.
The festival tent in the Jahnstadion parking lot is the spatial center of the festival. With 800 seats, it offers ample space for the evening festivities, the King's dinner, and the numerous stage performances. The central stage in the tent is complemented by a professional sound system and elaborate lighting. Admission to the festival tent is free.
A special feature of Göttingen is its connection to the German Theatre. On the opening Monday, June 19th, 2026, the premiere of the play "Jetzt schlägt's 13" by the DT actors will take place at the German Theatre – a cultural link between high culture and folk festival, which few marksmen's festivals in Germany can boast.
On Friday, June 20th, 2026, at 6:30 PM, the Lord Mayor of Göttingen will officially open the festival. This opening marks the beginning of the full program in the festival tent with live music, catering, and a lively atmosphere.
The highlight of the festival is the grand parade on Sunday, June 22nd, 2026, at 2 PM. The procession moves through Göttingen's city center, bringing together the Bürger-Schützen-Gesellschaft, friendly clubs, marching bands, traditional costume groups, floats, and honored guests. Thousands of spectators line the streets and accompany the parade, which lasts several hours.
The traditional Marksmen King's Morning Pint in the festival tent concludes the event on Monday, June 23rd, 2026. The new majesties are celebrated, the festival week is reviewed, and the festival ends with a cozy morning.
The festival week offers a mix of tradition, stage culture, and urban folk festival. The festival tent at Jahnstadion is the spatial center, but the program also extends to the German Theatre and the city center. This spatial and cultural breadth is a special feature of the Göttingen festival and distinguishes it from most other marksmen's festivals in the region.
The festival week begins on Monday with the theater premiere, gains intensity day by day, and culminates on Sunday with the grand parade. The Monday morning pint is the cozy conclusion, reviewing the festival week and honoring the new majesties.
